Girls’ basketball has exploded in the metro area over the past 10 years and the list of players that have eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier has grown over that time.

The newest member of the 1,000-point club has been a three-year starter for the Francis Howell Vikings and has grown as a leader on the court and in the classroom. Libby Brewster is our latest HSSC/Scoops with Danny Mac Student-Athlete of the Week.

Brewster scored her 1,000th point in a 41-30 victory over Marquette in the semifinal of the Lindbergh Tournament. In the game, she led the Vikings with 23 points, but it was the last two markers that put her in an elite club.

“People had been talking for about a week that I was close to the mark and that it would happen on the road at the Lindbergh Tournament,” said Brewster. “I knew that I need 23 points against a very good Marquette team, so I was not confident that I would get it that night. People were talking during the game that I was close and with about a minute left in the game, I had gotten fouled and went to the line for free throws. I knew I had to make both of those to get to that milestone, so it was very nerve-racking! I was happy to get it out of the way so that pressure was gone, and I can focus on team wins.”

Team wins are very important to the senior as she has developed into an outstanding team leader with a very young Viking team under new head coach Scott Cleer. One of the goals for the team is to win the conference title.

“I would love to win a conference title and we are currently tied with Ft. Zumwalt West for first place,” stated Brewster. “So, winning conference is a big one. I would love to win the district. We are in the same district as Incarnate Word, so we will see how that goes. I always want us to play as a team and player together.”

Being a part of the program as a three-year starter has turned Brewster into that leader that many of the younger players have learned to look up to. Brewster is currently third in the area in scoring with a 22.8 point per game average, so it makes it easy for the rest of the team to turn to her in clutch situations.

“When I was younger, I wanted to be a leader,” said Brewster. “And as I have grown older, I have become that. I am vocal and bring a lot of energy to practice and set the tone. If people have questions, I hope that they look to me to guide them along the way.”

Brewster is also an outstanding student, as she has a 4.1-grade point average in the classroom and will be attending the University of Missouri in the fall to further her education and major in economics or finances, as she is a big numbers person. One of the things that she will not be doing is playing basketball, as she wants to focus on her studies.

“I thought a lot about my future and decided not to play basketball in college,” stated Brewster. “I have been playing for so many years and I have worked very hard to earn my success, I have burned myself out along the way. So, I think closing this chapter after my senior year is a good time to move on. I’m going to miss it and I’m sure that I will play some sort of basketball, but for now, I’m going to Mizzou to work on my academics.”

Coach Cleer has been impressed with how Brewster handles herself on the court and in the classroom since he took over the program this year.

“Libby’s leadership is defined by her results and not her attributes,” stated Cleer. “She leads by example and not words every day on the court and that is refreshing in today’s sports.”

Brewster is the definition of what a student-athlete is and what it takes to be an outstanding leader in high school sports. Congratulations to Libby Brewster on earning our HSSC/Scoops with Danny Mac Student-Athlete of the Week Award!
