The De Smet boys’ track and field team earned a third-place finish in the All-Catholic Meet this past weekend while the St. Joseph’s Academy girls’ soccer turned in a terrific performance in the St. Louis Classic to highlight a busy weekend of prep sports.

Let’s get everyone up to speed with this week’s edition of the Monday Morning Wrap Up.

We start on the track as the Spartans used a record-setting performance from Brian Taylor to help De Smet place third with 104 points in the meet Saturday at Chaminade. St. Louis University High School earned fourth place with 102 points. Taylor broke the De Smet school record in the Long Jump with a leap of 7.01 meters to win the event. Tim Greiner from SLUH won the title in the 3200-meter run in a time of 9:58.60 while Eric Piening added points for the Jr. Bills by winning the High Jump in a leap of 1.92 meters

Out in St. Charles County, Fort Zumwalt North won the boys’ title at the Wolfpack Invite held at Timberland High School. The Panthers took home the title with 96 points while Westminster placed second with 70 points and the host Wolves earned third place with 69 points. Ayden Bredenkamp won the 100-meter Dash in a time of 11.01 to get things started for the Panthers. Fort Zumwalt North also won all three relays to pace the Panthers in winning the team race. Larry Minner was a force in the field events for Westminster as he won the Shot Put with a throw of 16.41 meters and then he took home the Discus title with a toss of 45.22.

Cardinal Ritter won the title with 123 points in girls’ action at Timberland, with the host Wolves placing second with 97 points. Francis Howell scored 59 points to place third in the team standings. Charlye Moody helped the Lions in the sprints by winning the 100-meter Dash in a time of 12.71 and then winning the 200-meter Dash in a mark of 24.60. Kyndall Spain was also a double winner for the Lions as she won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.27 and the 300-meter hurdles in a mark of 43.89.

The De Smet boys’ lacrosse team defeated SLHU in the annual Father Marco Cup game 10-5 Saturday afternoon at De Smet. Gavin Bomstad paced the Spartans’ attack with five goals while goalkeeper Kyle Grandquist turned away 12 Jr. Bills shots in the victory. The win for De Smet gives them a 4-3 record on the season.

On the soccer pitch, St. Joseph’s Academy exploded for four goals in the first half en route to a 5-0 victory over Edwardsville Saturday afternoon in the St. Louis Classic. Kelly Dean and Kiley Duchardt each scored a pair of goals in the win while Maddie Bowman added a goal to pace the Angels in the win to help them improve to 5-0 on the year. Katie Burns earned the shutout in goal for St. Joseph’s.

In a battle of teams that won state titles in Illinois last year, Triad scored a goal in the first half and played some outstanding defense in the second 40 minutes to defeat O’Fallon 1-0 Saturday afternoon. The defending Class 2 champions got an early goal from Laney Harshany after a pass from Kinlee Lippert to take the lead over the defending Class 3 titleholders. Reagan Chigas earned the shutout win for Triad, who improved to 9-0 on the year.

Mother Nature is going to have a big say in what outdoor events are going to take place during the week as many tames have already canceled events for Monday evening due to rain.

On the track, Parkway Central will be the place to be Wednesday and Thursday as 35 teams will participate in the annual Henle Holmes Invitational. In boys’ volleyball action, CBC and De Smet will hook up in a big Metro Catholic Conference battle Wednesday night at De Smet.

In baseball action, Westminster travels to St. Dominic in a big matchup Monday afternoon while Priory and MICDS will play in a mid-week home and home series starting Tuesday afternoon.
